This is a beautiful illustration and such a good example of how new “modern” fashion often references earlier periods ( 1960s redoes the 1930s). This was an aspect of my argument in the earlier discussion about the crass reinvention (reincarnation?) of Ossie Clark as a brand for Debenhams.
Incidentally I shall shortly be showing some pages from a 1930s Vogue Pattern Book that screams Ossie Clark and Celia Birtwell. No doubt as students they did their research into the fashion archives as well.
Oh I’m sure they did. Ossie was clearly a fan of Vionnet and Adrian!
You’re right of course. You can reference and be influenced by, but people like Ossie et al were generally bringing something new to the party… (much like Galliano and Westwood with more period clothing…). Personally I believe fashion designers should be employed straight out of a costume design course, I’m pretty sure there’s more creativity and innovation going on there than most fashion courses these days.
