Penelope Tree, nineteen, daughter of Mr Ronald and the Hon. Marietta Tree – the look of a dreamy Petrouchka. “I am all make-up,” she once said: she sees her face as a canvas, brushing on colour to strange, beguiling, sometimes extraordinary effect. While the effect on other people can be startling, she remains totally serene. Her imaginative face-painting began when she was thirteen. “I did it first to get attention, now I don’t notice it.” With a bright acquisitive mind that absorb countries, people, books, her heroes are Mailer and Nabokov, aesthetics and politics her life, and she takes a beautiful picture. Zandra Rhodes has started doing sweaters, startling sweaters. Designed a black kimono cardigan. Holes for arms to go through, rose pink edge and inset. Nell Campbell, small Australian dancer and actress, wears it, above, with Gamba’s pink wool leg warmers and a pair of black tights. Then, below, hugs Martin Sharp, Australian painter, wears another sweater that’s pink and green on top, huge green sleeved and blue ribbed into ducks’ tails. With this Zandra Rhodes black silk jersey skirt of lampshade frills; at Piero de Monzi. The sweaters, along with others dotty, frilly, fiercely striped, are in her collection at Browns.

The Belle Epoque styling in this advert is superb, from the hair and accessories through to the gloriously curvaceous model. Janet Reger adverts were always in a league of their own, and I think this may possibly be one of the Brian Duffy ones.

Snia Viscosa jumped right in at the deep end in Venice, invited twenty eccentric different and talented designers to do their own thing with their threads. The result was a spectacular Magliamoda at the Palazzo Grassi on the Grand Canal, and this is what Alice Pollock, Kenzo of Jap and Karl Lagerfeld did with it. What a show!

I think that these mannequins, used so artfully by Helmut Newton, might be the Willy van Rooy mannequin by Barway. Which also happens to be the mannequin I use for my vintage clothes!
