Vintage Adverts: Diana Crawshaw for Secret Ingredient

1970s, Diana Crawshaw, Mike Goodall, mr freedom, ritz magazine, Vintage Adverts

Secret Ingredient Advert Ritz Issue 31 1979

Can’t say I know much about Secret Ingredient, beyond the pieces I’ve seen in Ritz, but I was delighted to see that Diana Crawshaw (who was also one of the key designers for Mr Freedom) designed the clothes featured in this advert.

Men in Vogue Edina Ronay Autumn Winter 1970 1

A stunning set of images by Caroline Arber of the gorgeous Edina Ronay. The photographs are actually for a men’s accessories editorial, so there are no credits for the clothes. I am making an educated guess that the garments in the first two are Thea Porter because my Thea Porter gypsy dress is exactly the same print.

Another early appearance from Terry de Havilland, whose shoes were sold out of Rowley & Oram in Kensington Market and often not credited. I would [possibly] kill for those shoes. And the dress isn’t half bad either…

Wonderful to see further mention of John Dove and Molly White’s ‘Aspidistra’ label and to actually see one of the tattoed body stockings which were illustrated in this earlier post on my blog. Also, regular readers will know of my passion for Seventies underwear in general, and Janet Reger underwear in particular, so this stunningly photographed editorial is pretty much win-win as far as I’m concerned. Bubble perm included…

Inspirational Interiors: Beds With a Bonus

1970s, cosmopolitan, interior design, Robert Perron, Sante Forlano
The bed is built up on a plywood base that doubles as bookshelf and storage space. The mirror behind the headboard makes the whole room seem larger and the light box over the bed gives a modern canopy effect by allowing lights to glow through stripes of glass fibre. The cushions are appliqued in vivid colours to make extra seating.

If you think your bedroom is only for sleeping, look at these ideas for creating a total living environment.

Bedroom or living room? It's hard to tell which, with a platform bed built up on a stair and completely carpeted. Luxurious bedspread (make your own with fake fur fabric from a selection at John Lewis) and cushions add to comfort for guests who want to loll around. Create your own graphic design with glossy coloured paper or remnants of felt.

An age of frivolity and fantasy. Polka dots and bows. Shocking pinks and bobby socks. Flatties and flirties. Time for agod giggle; for screaming hysterically after all those movie idols in a great ‘Fifties revival

Some promising designs were submitted by students of the Kingston Polytechnic Fashion Department, when Gillian Richard organised a competition this season with the Polytechnic. We’re featuring a dress by the Second Prize winner, Joyce Dixon, as we think the design is right up-to-date and very original. Joyce comes from Carlisle, is in her third year at the Poly and has won many prizes for her designs. She works with Gillian Richard in her vacations, and hopes to go to the Royal College of Art in London for a further course. We wish her the best of luck. You should be seeing more of her designs in 19 in the future.
