It’s an accomplished fact that the warmest way to hibernate starts right next to your skin. Here, then, are some of the hottest bare body coverings – Short-johns, mid-johns, long-johns, vests, bodytops and a petticoat to wear under everything else, plus the cosiest nightie on the market.

Fabrics vary from wool to cotton jersey, man-mades and mixtures, all good old favourites that have proved their insulation properties over past winters. These hibernation undies are all warm investments and most of them glamorous enough to want to show off. Long-johns and mid-johns are staging a comeback as circulation increases: wear them rolled up, if you like, over tights, under socks. Pile them on to beat the winter.

Inspirational Editorials: Looks like luxury

1960s, alice pollock, barry lategan, Inspirational Images, lingerie, quorum, underwear, Vintage Editorials, Vogue

pollock lategan vogue dec 68 a

This luxury’s a look, a feel and a fact, and nothing to do with money. It’s satin and silver and velvet and ciré, it’s snowy fake-fur. We show it in layers. You look like a million dollars. Alice Pollock of Quorum designed this satin lingerie to be the softest thing next to your skin. There’s a small bra, shaped quite naturally, knickers that button to the side, and a languid caped dressing-gown that fastens once and touches your toes. All spun round with satin ribbons and made in the most appealing pale shades – magnolia, pink or powder blue.

Christmas is the time for sheer, unashamed luxury – and this lingerie is the very ultimate. Set the mood yourself – they’re so beautiful to be caught in unawares; accidentally on purpose, of course!

If anyone from Janet Reger ever reads my blog, please listen to my plea:

Your underwear in the Seventies was pure and utter perfection. Nothing you do now comes within a mile of it. I understand the need to conform to the current styles in underwear (and don’t even get me started on those…) but I can promise you that a range of archive pieces – in silk – would be a success. The cut and construction of your balcony bras leaves Gossard’s Wonderbra in the shade for cleavage, and the unpadded silk triangle bras are more than just triangles – they are unequalled in construction and support. But I’m sick of trying to find more vintage in my size. Other brands embrace their history with archive ranges, even those who don’t have such an impressive archive, so why not you?

Thank you.
