Bill Gibb takes lots of exquisite fabrics – silks from China, English embroidered nets, exclusive Liberty prints – and turns them into glamorous, witty clothes. For day, his new look recalls the Fifties. It’s a subtle, feminine nostalgia – not the garish decade revived by the Kings Road – and one to be worn with style.

Harpers and Queen not at all snobbish in their dismissal of wild Kings Road boutique Rock’n’Roll revivers there. Still, pretty Bill Gibb clothes stunningly illustrated means I’ll forgive them just this once.

How many of you have bothered to do anything to your rooms since you moved into them months and months ago? Are you still living in a shamefully untidy bed-sitter, and do you still get that ‘How I wish I had a cheerful, bright room’ feeling every time you come home from work? Have you, for weeks now, been meaning to get down on hands and knees to scrub and scrape? Has your boy-friend repeatedly offered to help wall-paper the ceiling and bang the nails in? We asked Barbara Hulanicki of Biba to design a fairly inexpensive bed-sitter for 19, incorporating a few original ideas that were not unduly complicated to carry out. She chose Pontings, which has a good whitewood department—the result is rather stunning. You can see the 19 Biba and Pontings’ bed-sitter on display, from 19th September, in the window of Pontings, next door to the High Street Kensington tube station. All merchandise can be got from Biba. (opposite Pontings at 124 High Street Kensington, London, W.8) or Pontings.

Ottavio and Rosita Missoni are to Italian knit as Gucci is to leather. Using inspiration from original an unexpected quarters – a piece of antique porcelain, a fragment of embroidery, a picture painted by someone they then employ in their factory and train to use their knitting machines – together they produce the most beautiful knits in ravishing colours, extraordinary patterns and perfect shapes.

We threw in the line and fished out some of the best and most original shoes that are in the shops this spring. It may not be an ideal catch for a real angler, but then it depends what you’re fishing for, doesn’t it?
