Spring is a bright new feeling

This image doesn’t exactly scream ‘Spring is a bright new feeling’ at me, but it does scream ‘hair and choker goals’ right in my face.

Advert for Donbros.

The Varnished and the Unvarnished

1970s, David Anthony, elizabeth arden, Honey Magazine, Inspirational Images, Make-up

the-varnished-and-the-unvarnished

This picture isn’t a ludicrous flight of fancy. Those nails belong to Bonnie, a girl who really does scrabble about under the bonnet of her car checking oil, batteries and spark plug. She also shoes the odd bit of typing and her fair share of washing up, plug changing and picture hanging.

But maybe we have been a little unfair. Bonnie is not only one of our favourite make-up artists (working for Elizabeth Arden) but she’s a fully trained manicurist too.

One of the many interesting things about a steadily growing magazine collection is that you start to identify original source images for illustrations. I imagine that Mr John Storey never imagined that anyone would remember a single photo of Ika Hindley in Cosmopolitan from a year earlier, even less that someone yet-to-be-born would later scan and connect the two images.

Add a bit of extravagance to your life with freaky shaggy jackets in flamboyant fur fabrics — everything from bold plaids and curly poodle wools to mock animal prints. Dress up everyday skirts and trousers with short boxy boleros and bottom-skimming jackets with wide 40s shoulders. Best of all, go vampy with shiny satin trousers or shorts and add a final sparkling touch of diamante.

Inspirational Illustrations: Twiggies and Shrimptons

1960s, Barbara Hanrahan, Honey Magazine, Illustrations

twiggy shrimpton barbara hanrahan honey september 1967

For a long time I firmly believed that we all wanted to become a nation of mass-produced Twiggies and Shrimptons. Hankering after the security of knowing there isn’t anybody with a nicer figure/face/hair, we all jump on the trendy bandwagon, and do whatever is expected of us in the cause of fashion. And where fashion is concerned, it seems we are all prepared to do anything…

Dreary copy, I won’t bore you with any more, but a gorgeous illustration of Twiggy and Shrimpton-types by Barbara Hanrahan.
