Trying to brighten up your living area with the minimum of cost is a difficult thing to do if it involves buying a cosy sofa or even buying new seat covers (have you noticed the prices lately?). The only way for a poor girl to cope is to think practical and get into the cottage industry kick with some nice fabric, a needle and thread. The simplest and most comfortable way to make a living-room really liveable in—i.e., to plonk around and relax in, as well as providing a soft space for an overnight guest to kip on to go into cushions in a big way.
All cushions, except for our sag bags, came from Pontings. They do a range of foam and feather ones. We covered them in fabrics from a selection at Pontings, Derry and Toms and Barkers. Prices are for cushions only. We filled our sag bags with polystyrene beads and have arranged that 19 readers can buy this lovely stuff at a special price (see overleaf).

Jane Cattlin deserves them for making a whole clutch of wantable tops in clinging, sexy rayon jersey you wear with pants, long skirts, short skirts and under sober office suits for a straight-on-to-a-rave-up date. Simpsons of Piccadilly have taken the whole beautiful range shown above.

One thing that designer Antony Price really understands is pattern cutting : “I can think of a shape and create an optical illusion — people’s figures don’t change, clothes make figures.” Price, who designed all these clothes, wants women now to start looking artificially female, but “in a sumptuous way — this time it’s bosoms, hips and tiny waists”. He admits to being influenced by the Fifties and his ex-showgirl sister who lives in Miami and looks like his idol Jayne Mansfield. “The Fifties were less extreme, taste was incorporated into everything.” He wants shoes tall and dangerous like his own cowboy boots, but insists that his clothes (available direct or mail order from Che Guevara, 23 Kensington High St, W8) are comfortable. “What’s more comfortable than swimming costume tops?”
So, so good. Model, designer and photographer are the most perfect combination. It even has Manolo Blahnik shoes for good measure.

DRAINPIPE TROUSERS, PATENT STILETTOS, LUMINOUS SOCKS COME ROCKING BACK
Wonderful to see the combination of Let It Rock, Wonder Workshop and Terry de Havilland in one shoot by Roxy Music cover photographer Karl Stoecker. I’m not the biggest fan of the original Fifties look, if I’m honest, but there’s just something magical about the way this revival scene bridges the Seventies from Glam Rock to Punk and New Wave.
If anyone can identify the male models (or indeed the female ones) let me know. I think Mickey Finn might be one of them (third image, hanging out of the right hand car door), and possibly Antony Price. Which would make sense with Stoecker as photographer.
