I was always curious about what Alice Pollock got up to in her post-Quorum days. Now I know a little more, although of course this is the only reference to Circus I’ve ever seen.

Yvonne and Alan Harmon’s completely contemporay black flocked music room, lying extraordinarily at the heart of a traditional antique furnished house. The designer, Royston Fulljames, used new American speakers, Bang & Olufsen turntable. There are push button black blinds and lights to flash on dim, a round Keracolour television, flocked black too, and three big, comfortable, black leather chairs from Harrods. The Perspex sculpture with flashing lights, by S.P. White, from Presents of Sloane St; it’s all very much in tune.

Television is a terrific stimulus to fashion. What Cathy McGowan wears on Ready, Steady, Go! may be in your High Street dress shop a matter of days later in a mass-produced copy. And John Steed’s immaculate Avenger image has played its part in the male peacock revolution. For our television issue here is an ‘outside broadcast’ collection of action clothes.

Your underwear in the Seventies was pure and utter perfection. Nothing you do now comes within a mile of it. I understand the need to conform to the current styles in underwear (and don’t even get me started on those…) but I can promise you that a range of archive pieces – in silk – would be a success. The cut and construction of your balcony bras leaves Gossard’s Wonderbra in the shade for cleavage, and the unpadded silk triangle bras are more than just triangles – they are unequalled in construction and support. But I’m sick of trying to find more vintage in my size. Other brands embrace their history with archive ranges, even those who don’t have such an impressive archive, so why not you?

On beads and bibelots . . . and 23-year-old BIBETTE WAINWRIGHT, below, who wears them and makes them. Bibette, incidentally, spent three years at Bristol University and took a degree in psychology. Slim and delicate, with pale blonde hair and pre-Raphaelite looks, Bibette is a great health food fanatic, eats only macrobiotic foods. She works in her large studio-cum-bed-sit, bare save for the Larry Smart posters of Jimmy Hendricks [sic] and a motley wardrobe of granny dresses, silk pyjamas and fur coats, hung round the walls and collected from the antique markets which she spends hours exploring and which is where she first became interested in Victorian jewellery and beading. Tucked away under the window is her collection of beads. Clustering in boxes, beautiful glass beads — opaque Victorian glass, brilliant shining modern crystals. These she strings by hand into chokers and bracelets, belts and headbands. The designs are adapted from Japanese and Indian motifs, but sort of have a ’20s feel about them — and Bibette will design to order. From about 2½gns to 10gns, they are available from a selection at Thea Porter, 8 Greek Street, W1 or to order direct from Bibette at 26 East Tenter St, E1.
