. . . does not always suit a mother’s requirements. Not only is today’s teenager wildly enthusiastic about fashion, pop, hair and makeup, but she also has very firm ideas about what she wants. She is sophisticated, worldly and confident, seeing herself as a femme fatale —while mother sees her more in terms of gymslips. So here we present the perfect compromise, contrived to impress mother and daughter alike. Visual backing comes from members of the group Queen, whose current hit single for EMI is The Seven Seas of Rhye.

The Last Throes of Summer

1970s, Baltrik, Eva Sereny, Harvey Nichols, Inspirational Images, sunday times magazine, swimwear, Vintage Editorials

One of the perennial absurdities of the rag trade is that at the peak of the holiday season they start to pack the shops with winter merchandise. However, Harvey Nichols 21 Shop is selling the beachwear by Baltrik shown here for people taking their holidays now.

So lovely and rare to see a swimwear shoot by a woman photographer. The difference is subtle but I feel like there’s more candid and sensitive approach. Perhaps it’s just because Eva Sereny is one of my favourite photographers.

You’ve doubled your party outfits. Search around street markets for strips of exotic fabric — wind them round your head or drape them around your shoulders.
